Rocky and Apollo reunion on the table for Creed 2
Creed proves that legacy truly is more than a name, perpetuating the success of the Rocky franchise with its critical and commercial success, many critics praising it as one of the best Rocky films ever. To date, the smash hit has grossed over $115.8 million worldwide, against a budget of $35 million. It is no surprise therefore that Creed 2 is already in the works. There is just no keeping this knockout franchise down.
Speaking during an interview with Variety, Sylvester Stallone revealed that the sequel has been given the green light and discussed possible story lines. One potential idea would be a linear story with Adonis that reflects Rocky IV. “You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian,” Stallone mused. However, when speaking about story line option number two, Stallone really became excited. This version would take place in the present and in the past. “Think of The Godfather II”, Stallone said in the interview. A narrative styled in this fashion would allow for a reunion between Rocky and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Adonis’ father, who was killed in Rocky IV. Stallone believes Weathers, a former professional football player, would be more than ready to step back into the ring, joking that “I can’t believe I got in the ring with him. Even if it was play fighting.”
Ryan Coogler, director of Creed, though somewhat surprised that Stallone had already divulged their plans, laughed that “there are no secrets with Sly”. However, Coogler, only 29 years old, may be unable to lead the way on the new production due to talks of him directing Black Panther, set for release in 2018. Whether works will be put on hold for Coogler, who was responsible for much of Creed’s success, or if a new director will be brought in remains to be decided. One thing is for certain though, Creed, set for release here in Irish theatres on 15th January, clearly packs one hell of a punch.
