Award season gets into full swing this month and excitement levels rise even higher now with the release of the 2016 BAFTA nominations. It has been such an incredible year for film, and although not all with walk away victorious, each motion picture named is deserving of the recognition. And so, the nominations go to…

Leading the way, with an impressive nine nominations each, are Bridge of Spies and Carol, followed by The Revenant which is nominated in eight categories. Next comes Mad Max: Fury Road, with seven nominations, while Brooklyn and The Martian receive six each. The Danish Girl, The Big Short and Ex Machina each get five nominations and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is named in four categories.

The Danis Girl Movies @ Cinemas EzineIn the running for Best Film are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Carol, The Revenant, and Spotlight, while included in the Outstanding British Film category are Brooklyn and The Danish Girl. Brooklyn, based on Colm Toibin’s coming of age novel of the same title, is also nominated for Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair, while it’s leading lady, Carlow’s own Saoirse Ronan, who earlier this week won The New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress, is up for Leading Actress. She faces some stiff competition though, with Room’s Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett from Carol, and Maggie Smith from Lady in the Van all included in the same the category. Best Actor nominees meanwhile include Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Eddie Redmayne for his powerful portrayal in The Danish Girl, and Steve Job’s Michael Fassbender.

Brooklyn

The biggest film of the year, and seemingly soon to be the most successful film of all time, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has been nominated for Production Design, Sound, Special Visual Effects and Original Music, for which The Hateful Eight and The Revenant are also nominated.
