The cinema was alive with the sound of music last night here at SGC Dungarvan when Wagner’s acclaimed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg was brought to vivid life by David McVicar’s stunning production. Composed by Michael Güttler and starring the celebrated cast of Gerald Finley, Amanda Majeski, Michael Schade, supported by the astounding London Philharmonic Orchestra, this stirring feat of operatic mastery came live to SGC Dungarvan from Glyndebourne. Tremendously enjoyed by all who got to experience this joyous comedy, with Dungarvan’s own Jim Ryan giving the following praise-filled review –
“A memorable performance in a superb, unfussy production with Orchestral playing that sparkled right from the first note. Great singing all round with Gerald Finley giving a performance for the ages in the mammoth role of Sachs. The chorus sang magnificently, with the ‘crowd’ scenes wonderfully choreographed. From ‘the best seat in the house’, I found this to be one of my most thrilling operatic experiences in fifty years of operagoing. Bravo Glyndebourne.”
A real treat for opera fans. If you missed out on this beautiful performance fear not because we have plenty more cultural events coming to our screens in the coming days, weeks and months.
